Sony Admits "Difficult" Fight with HD-DVD

So after months of PR spin, telling us "Blu Ray has won!" over and over, now we get a candid comment from the Sony CEO about the format war...how it's a "difficult" fight and saying HD-DVD is a formidable opponent?

This going into the holiday season??

Something is going on, as I find the timing very odd. Perhaps he knows one of the major Blu Ray supporters is going to HD-DVD after the 1st of the year, perhaps they have projections about the HD-DVD players sold in the last few weeks...either way something seems to be up. And I give him credit, either way, for finally speaking with some honesty, which is one thing we haven't heard much of from "his side" since the format war began.

NEW YORK - The head of Sony Corp., Howard Stringer, said Thursday that the Blu-ray disc format the company has developed as the successor to the DVD is in a "stalemate" with the competing HD DVD format, chiefly backed by Toshiba Corp. and Microsoft Corp.

"It's a difficult fight," said Stringer, speaking at the 92nd Street Y cultural center in Manhattan.
